Designer or Developer?

  • Are they same thing?
  • Do I need to get two people?
  • What do they each do?

In my definition they are not the same thing.
You may need two people but one may be all you need.
What do they do? (that will take more than a line)

Designer = they do just what you are thinking - design a web site. The way that it looks. They create that nice little page that you see with the colors, text and pictures. They may help create flash, or other cool features that you see.

Developer = they are often times the programmer. They create everything in the backend so that your site works. Many times they will also create shopping carts, databases and or the other cool features that you DON’T see.

A designer and developer go hand in hand. You can have a great looking website that is hard to navigate, has broken links, and in general does not work. On the other hand you can have all kinds of neat features that are running in the background, but your site looks TERRIBLE!

When you are signing up for a web site make sure that the person or people can give you the things that you need. Many times a dedicated programmer is not something that you need. However, the designer should know enough about programming to create a WORKING site.
